This might be a bit NewB Information, but it might hit you when you get your fingers on a virtual server, happend to be Linux, without fancy windows and double-clicking installers, but annoying good-old-fashion shell screens/terminals with a blinking caret only:

  • Download from java.sun.com.  Select Linux Distribution.
  • Copy jdk-xxx-linux-i586.bin to /opt
  • Make it executable: chmod +x jdk-xxx-linux-i586.bin
  • Execute it: ./opt/jdk-xxx-linux-i586.bin
  • Confirm License Agreement
  • Add to path: export PATH=/_path_to_your_jdk_/jre/bin:$PATH (add this to /etc/profile.local)
  • Check it from any path: java -version: Should result similar to
    java version “1.6.0_11”
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
Java Hotspot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode)
